5 Stories From The Bible About Following Jesus
Here are 5 great stories from the Bible about following Jesus.
Count the Cost – Luke 14
It will cost you something to follow Jesus. Some are hesitant to be friends with Christians or to hire a believer, so it’s no wonder Jesus said “For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it” (Luke 14:28)? It may cost you something in this world, but following Jesus into the kingdom will pay infinite rewards that the world’s wealth pales in comparison to.
Follow Me – Matthew 16
You cannot live in the world and like the world if you follow Jesus. The Lord said, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me” (Matthew 16:24). We don’t normally deny ourselves anything, but taking up Jesus’ cross and following Him is all about denying one self and not denying Jesus publicly. Taking up His cross means we share the burdens He had as He was rejected by men, scorned for the gospel, and forsaken by His disciples and followers. Following Him is easy to say…but exceedingly hard to do.
Difficult and Narrow – Acts 4
To enter the kingdom of God is to be taking a narrow, difficult path. It’s narrow because Jesus is the One and only way into the kingdom (Acts 4:12). Jesus reminds us of the difficulty of following Him, saying that “the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few” (Matthew 7:14). It might seem like many are finding it, but it is actually few that find it, for many claim to believe, but these same many will be turned away when Christ tells them to depart from Him for all time (Matthew 7:21-23).
Forsaking All – Luke 14
Many believers around the world have to choose; they must choose between following Jesus or following this world. If they follow Jesus, they must forsake all for Him, “So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple” (Luke 14:33). That means forsaking our own way; perhaps forsaking old friends who still run with the Devil; and forsaking all others and things to follow Him.
In His Fold – John 10
The Lord is our Good Shepherd, and all who are in His flock, He knows, and they know Him (John 10:14), so it’s not so much whether we know Jesus, but does He know us! The Lord said that “When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice” (John 10:4). Following Jesus is following His words, and those words are found in Scripture.
Not Always Easy
Following Jesus is not easy. It is costly. It will mean pain, rejection, scorn, and public ridicule, but that’s what Jesus faced too, so we can’t expect they’ll treat us any better than they treated Him. We may not have to die on a cross for following Him, but we do have to bear our own cross and forsake everything else to follow Jesus…but it is infinitely worth it in every way.
