Jesus
I like the acronym J.O.Y. I use it when I pray, first praying to God through Jesus and praying for others and, finally, for myself, dead last. In this case, it’s not about prayer but about our top three priorities in life; and in the order of first importance is Jesus Christ. He said we must seek the kingdom above all (Matthew 6:33), and surely that means seeking the King of that kingdom first.
Others
When we pray, I believe we should put others ahead of ourselves. This is what the Bible teaches. The Apostle Paul wrote to “do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves” (Philippians 2:3), and to “love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor” (Romans 12:10). So, yes, pray for others before yourself; but also serve others ahead of your own interests, as Jesus put our interests ahead of His.
Yourself
There is certainly nothing wrong with praying for your own needs but also in taking good care of yourself. You’re no good to Christ or to others if you’re not taking care of yourself, and I plead guilty to this one. I have learned the hard way to take time to rest and rejuvenate. I need some downtime, just as Jesus had to seek time alone. Take time for yourself or you can’t make time for others.
Conclusion
Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee said, “Inside every human being there are treasures to unlock.” However, it’s up to us to unlock them. We must turn the handle and serve Christ first and foremost above all other things and people. We must put others’ interests above our own, but we must also take time to rest and recharge our spiritual batteries. We’re only human. Every one needs some downtime. None of us are the exception.
