– Isaac Watts
Abraham
An excellent example from the Old Testament of someone who was all in for God is Abram (later changed to Abraham). When “the Lord said to Abram, ‘Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you’ ” (Genesis 12:1), Abraham didn’t stop and think about leaving his home, most of his family, his job, his old place of (pagan) worship, and his old city or nation of Ur. It only says, “Abram went, as the Lord had told him” (Genesis 12:4).
David
When the young teen David heard Goliath uttering blasphemies against God, he didn’t stop to think about it, count the cost, or even consider the risk of being killed. David came up to this giant of a man and said, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied” (1 Samuel 17:45). “So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and struck the Philistine and killed him. There was no sword in the hand of David” (1 Samuel 17:50). One thing is certain: David was all in for God.
Paul
When Saul (later changed to Paul) had been persecuting the church, God struck him down on the Damascus Road (Acts 9). Why would God do such a thing? It’s possible this was the only way to reach Paul because he was so obsessed with wiping out the church that no human witness could probably bring him to saving faith. Therefore, God had to take drastic action. I am sure if someone tried to witness to him, he’d probably put them in prison or have them stoned. However, after Paul’s conversion, he became the greatest missionary of all and was all in for God.
Jesus
There is no better example than Jesus Christ, Who gave His own life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45). He was willing to die for wicked, ungodly sinners who were His natural enemies (like we once were) (Romans 5:6-10). He died for those who fell infinitely short of God’s glory (Romans 3:23). Not one person He died for was really “good” (Romans 3:10-11). There is no greater love than when Christ laid down his life for us (John 15:13). Even though Jesus is both God and Man, He was all in, as He willingly gave His life to save those who would trust in Him (John 3:16).
Conclusion
The promises of God are so certain that if we were playing Texas Hold Em’, we could bet everything we had. Since Jesus went all in for us, we know that we, too, will be “in” as far as being in the New Jerusalem is concerned. That’s a promise that cannot be broken for those who trust in Him.
