Feelings Can Deceive Us
Whenever I speak with people who say the feel that they are not saved or that they feel that God doesn’t love them, I usually ask them “Which do you trust more? Is it your feelings or the Word of God?” Of course they usually answer, “God’s Word” but then they add, “But I feel…” They’re back to their feelings again. I suggest they read the Gospel of John to find assurance in God’s Word, and stop relying on their feelings. Human feelings are overrated, but God’s Word is always true.
No Solid Footing
When we were young and built sandcastles on the shore, eventually the tide would come in and wash them all away. Likewise, whoever builds their house on the sand of human feelings, is building on sinking sand. Jesus says, “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock” (Matt 7:24). I want a rock for a foundation and not my feelings, because “who is God, but the Lord? And who is a rock, except our God” (Psalm 18:31)?
The Same, Forever
Feelings come and feelings go. In other words, our feelings are good for a time when things seem to be going well, but when bad things start to happen, our feelings begin to change. Our feelings can push us further into the depths of gloom if we’re not careful. When that happens, remember that God is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Heb 13:8). He is not going to forsake you, ever (Heb 13:5)! Aren’t you glad God doesn’t depend on feelings like we do? What if Jesus didn’t feel like going to the cross, or what if the Father didn’t feel like sending His Son? Thankfully, God does not change His mind. Trust Him and not your feelings.
Eternal Love
When the Apostle Paul was trying to reassure the Christians at Rome, he wanted them to focus on the fact that whatever they were going through isn’t going to be anything like what’s coming in eternity (Rom 8:18). Whatever happens is going to be for their best. God promises that (Rom 8:28). God’s love is not dependent upon what we feel or how we do, but upon Who God is, and His love endures forever.
Conclusion
I love C.S. Lewis, and what he said; “Though our feelings come and go, God’s love for us does not.” He understood that human feelings are way overrated; that we should stand of the bedrock of God’s Word; that He doesn’t change, even though we do; and His love does not depend on our performance, but upon Who He is! Thank You Lord for Your everlasting love. Even if we don’t feel it, we know it’s true.
