4 Ways To Build Up Others

“Let us encourage one another.”

– Hebrews 10:25

Stirring Up Love in One Another

When a fire is beginning to die out, sometimes it just takes a little stirring up of the coals to get it going again. Without this, the fire will go out, so when we are stirring up one another in love, we are encouraging our brothers and sisters to act in loving ways with one another. More than that, the author of Hebrews writes, “let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works” (Heb 10:24). If we don’t stir up one another to love, then it shows that love is not very important to us (which of course, it is!).

Stirring up Good Works

We also need to stir up the coals of good works in one another. How do we do this? By doing good ourselves. When we do good works for our brothers and sisters and others outside of the church, we are stirring up the body of Christ to do good works. Seeing others do good works is contagious. It makes others want to do the same thing, so “consider how to stir up one another to love and good works” (Heb 10:24).

Not Neglecting One Another

We can’t build one another up in love and stir up one another to good works if we’re not meeting together with one another. The author of Hebrews tells us that we should not be “neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near” (Heb 10:25). It’s impossible to stir up one another in love and good works if we’re not around others. In fact, the more we neglect assembling as the Body of Christ, the church, the more we neglect stirring up one another in love and good works.

Encouraging One Another

Finally, let us encourage one another after we have stirred up our brothers and sisters to good works and love in assembling together as a body. To encourage someone means you fortify their courage or give them the courage to continue in good works and love. We need one another. This is evident throughout the New Testament church.

Conclusion

We can either build one another up or neglect our assembling together and not be stirring up one another in good works, in love, and in encouraging one another. It’s impossible to encourage one another if we’re not around one another.
