Do All Things
J.I. Packer, by saying, “You will never need more than He can supply,” means that we will never need more than God is able to supply. Our needs can never outstrip God’s provisions. Surely, you’re familiar with the Apostle’s Paul statement that “I can do all things through him who strengthens me” (Phil 4:13), so the opposite must also be true and is just as Jesus said, “apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:5). With Christ, all things are possible, but without Him, we can do nothing…and nothing is not a “little” something.
All Riches
The Apostle Paul wrote “And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus” (Phil 4:19), so why do I and perhaps you naturally worry about every need of ours? It’s because we often trust what we see with our eyes more than what we don’t see (like God), however God is more real than the things we see, because He created them and all things consist, at the smallest level, of things that cannot be seen by the naked eye, so “what is seen was not made out of things that are visible” (Heb 11:3). Trust the God Who owns the cattle on a thousand hills (Psalm 50:10), and in fact, He owns the hills too!
The Birds of the Air
God has promised to take care of us and that means if we seek Him and the kingdom of God first, we’ll never have to worry about our personal needs being met (Matt 6:33). Since God takes care of the birds of the air, ensuring they won’t starve to death, do we really think God won’t take care of us? Jesus said, we’re of more worth than “many sparrows” (Matt 10:31), so we are never going to need more than God can supply.
Conclusion
Let’s both of us strive to remember that God’s Word says we can do all things in Christ but nothing without Him; that all things belong to Him and what good father wouldn’t want to give to His own children good things (Matt 7:11); and since God takes care of the least in the world, like the sparrows, will He not much more take care of you and me?
