– George Herbert
Prayer Opens Doors
The Apostle Paul certainly believed in prayer and this is why he asked the church at Colossae to “pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ, on account of which I am in prison” (Col 4:3). Did this prayer work? It says “they declared all that God had done with them, and how he had opened a door of faith to the Gentiles” (Act 14:27). Prayer opens doors that no man can.
Prayer Accesses God
Jesus was telling His disciples that they must abide in Him and in His Word, otherwise, “apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:5b), and nothing means in any language, nothing, however, Jesus continues, “If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you” (John 15:7), but only “If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it” (John 14:14).
Prayer Locks the Night
We all lock our doors at night to keep out burglars because if the thief has an open door, he or she will walk right through it, but prayer is “the lock of the night.” George Herbert means by this that whatever God closes remains closed and whatever God opens it remains open, so whatever the time, day or night, prayer is the key to whatever happens and whatever we ask for.
Conclusion
Prayer is our greatest need next to Christ because prayer opens doors that only God can open; prayer accesses the throne of God and the power of God; and prayer locks or opens whatever God wills for us so it’s a matter of trust. The question is, “Will we walk through that door?”
