The Wrong Path
Early in my life, I was heading down the wrong path. I didn’t realize then that “Bad company ruins good morals” (1st Cor 15:33). I had not yet learned that God’s “word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Psalm 119:105), so I was walking the path of life in darkness, and sure enough, I wandered from it and fell, and I mean fell hard! God interrupted my darkened path to bring me into the light, and ultimately, to the Light of Life (John 8:12).
A Closed Door
Today, I can look back at my life and see how futile it was to try to open a door without God opening it for me. Jesus spoke to the church at Philadelphia about an open door, saying “Behold, I have set before you an open door, which no one is able to shut. I know that you have but little power, and yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name” (Rev 3:8). In other words, God opens doors before we get there, but thankfully, He closes doors we’re not supposed to walk through because He knows we might hurt ourselves.
An Open Door
As I said before, God sometimes opens a door for us to walk through, but if it’s closed, that means it is closed to us and that it’s not His will that we try to pry the door open. Rather than trying to open a door by ourselves, which is not a good idea because we only have a little strength in ourselves (Rom 3:8), let god open the door for us. Once again, Jesus says, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me” (Rev 3:20), so sometimes God allows us to open a door, but only a door that He is standing outside of and knocking on.
A Better Way
You actually want to pray that God will interrupt what you’re doing so that He can do what He wills. In other words, sometimes we get in the way of what God is trying to do. It’s like we’re getting between the rock and hammer and interfering with what God’s trying to do in our life or the life of others. He has a better way. Let Him guide us, and if necessary, let Him interrupt us.
Conclusion
There is so much wisdom in Francis Chan saying, “God interrupt whatever we are doing so that we can join You in what You’re doing.” That’s because we are often on the wrong path; we try to walk through doors that are closed; we must open that door which Christ is at; and we know that His way is always a far better way.
