4 Ways God Sustains Us In Our Fatigue

“Those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles.”

– Isaiah 40:31

Strength for the Faint

Isaiah the Prophet wrote that God “gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength” (Isaiah 40:29). I have never fainted but I’ve been around a few people that have fainted but maybe these people had a physical reason for fainting. That’s not who Isaiah is writing about but rather those who have grown weary over their walk with God. God can renew their strength like no other…and that includes you who are weary and heavy laden.

Power for the Young and Old

When we are living out the Christian faith we often grow weary of doing good, just as the Apostle Paul wrote to the church at Galatia, “let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up” (Gal 6;9), so even though “youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted” (Isaiah 40:30), they don’t stay that way because God will renew their strength so they can “soar on wings like eagles.”

Time to Wait

It is not those who act on their own impulses or in their own strength that God renews, but rather “they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles” (Isaiah 40:31a). An eagle is unlike any other bird because it can soar effortlessly in the air, riding the wind currents and they are strong enough to soar over most storm clouds, so in this way, if we wait upon the Lord, He will renew our strength, but we must wait upon the Lord and wait patiently.

Renewing our Strength

After we’ve waited on the Lord and He has strengthened us in our weariness, only then “they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint” (Isaiah 40:31b). You can’t run without being weary or walk without fainting without first waiting upon the Lord and His divine timing. Maybe then, even the eagles will be jealous of our soaring.

Conclusion

God gives strength to the weary so don’t grow faint in doing good for God. We must wait for His timing and not strike out on our own, and then and only then can God renew our strength and we can “run and not be weary” and “walk and not faint.”
