Top 11 Bible Verses To Fight Lust
5 Stories From The Bible About Fighting Lust
Here are 5 great stories from the Bible about fighting lust.
Waring Against the Flesh – 1 Peter 2
There’s a war going on, and I don’t mean between two armies, but between our soul and the flesh, and this war won’t be over until we enter the kingdom, therefore the Apostle Peter said, “Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul” (1 Peter 2:11). The passions of the flesh can get us if we’re not diligently seeking the Lord in prayer and in His Word.
Putting to Death – Romans 8
Living according to the flesh is just how most of the unsaved world lives, but for believer, we are told that “if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live” (Romans 8:13). Some have gone on to be with the Lord early since they did not resist the temptations of the flesh, and the consequences of those sins of the flesh were drastic, so we must put them to death by the power of God’s Spirit.
Covenantal Eyes – Job 31
This verse has helped many men and women overcome their addiction to pornography. They’ve memorized it so that when they are tempted, they can quote, “I have made a covenant with my eyes; how then could I gaze at a virgin” (Job 31:1)? It really does work. Make a covenant with your eyes, and the moment you see sexually explicit images, look away and remember that covenant you have with your eyes.
Be Ye Holy – 1 Peter 1
God’s people are called to live in holiness because God is holy. We are to be like Christ and not like the world, so we must come out of this world, “Since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy” (1 Peter 1:16). While we must remain in the world, we don’t have to be part of the world. Coming out of the world’s sins is commanded of all believers. Since God is holy, so must we strive to be holy.
Breaking Addictions – Galatians 5
The way we can break addictions is to have a renewed mind (Romans 12:1-2) and allow the power of God’s Spirit to help us avoid temptations like “envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God” (Galatians 5:21). We all fall into sin, but we don’t practice those things day after day. We need to break away from these things (“envy, drunkenness, orgies”) and trust in God’s power to help us overcome them because those who practice such things will not be inheriting the kingdom. We will.
Fighting Lust
Fighting lust can be helped with an accountability partner; a trusted Christian friend who can be our prayer partner and accountability partner. We cannot go it alone in this world. We need one another, but of course, most of all we need God and His Word and His Spirit to help us fight against lust.
