5 Stories From The Bible About Comfort And Strength
Here are 5 inspiring stories about finding comfort and strength in God and His Word during times of need.
Jesus Christ and Matthew 26
Jesus actually prayed three times to have “this cup” removed (Matt 26:36-44), speaking of the coming Passion, crucifixion and all that this entailed (the scourging, shame, suffering, and abandonment) at the cross. He knew that He was truly not alone, even though to everyone else, it appeared that way. Even though He was betrayed by His own people, His disciples fled, and those who just a week earlier had cried, “Hosanna in the Highest” (Mark 11:10), called, “crucify Him,” (Luke 23:12), He was never forsaken by the Father.
Jesus knew that He was sent to give His life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45), and that this was the only way it could be done. He knew His purpose and the coming suffering that would fall upon Him…the sins of the world, upon One Whom knew no sin (2 Cor 5:21).
The Apostle Paul and 2 Timothy 4
If you’ve ever read 2 Timothy, you realize that this was the very last letter that the Apostle Paul wrote. It was almost like his last will and testament. He knew full well that his time was drawing near, but he never despaired as he drew comfort from knowing he would soon be with the Lord, but he also drew strength from the fact that, even though he had been abandoned by others, he still had Jesus Christ with him.
It seems heartbreaking when Paul writes, “Demas, in love with this present world, has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica. Crescens has gone to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia” (2 Tim 4:10), but he was not discouraged but strengthened and found comfort in the fact that “the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion’s mouth” (2 Tim 4:17). How encouraging that is!
King David and 2 Samuel 12
After David had sinned by committing adultery and conspiracy to commit murder, we might think that God’s done with David. It says, “And the Lord afflicted the child that Uriah’s wife bore to David, and he became sick. David therefore sought God on behalf of the child. And David fasted and went in and lay all night on the ground” (2 Sam 12:15-16). How did God answer David’s prayer? The child died (2 Sam 12:18), but what was David’s reaction? He took comfort in the fact that he knew “I shall go to him, but he will not return to me” (2 Sam 12:23), meaning that children who die in youth are not lost forever but we know we shall see them again. What a precious promise from God to draw comfort and strength from!
Abraham and Genesis 22
Abraham prayed and prayed, and yet waited for a decade for the child of promise. He knew that God would perform what He had promised, but when God finally blessed him with Isaac, the Lord asked him to sacrifice this son. Can we imagine how hard that must have been!?
What was Abraham’s reaction? Was it, “Why Lord” or “I can’t do this Lord?” No. Abraham obeyed God and an angel stayed the hand of Abraham at the last moment…as God often does in our lives. God told Abraham that “because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore. And your offspring shall possess the gate of his enemies” (Gen 22:16-18).
The Apostle Peter and John 21
The Apostle Peter promised Jesus that even if all others would forsake Him, he never would, and yet, Peter did forsake him. What was Jesus reaction? Being ever merciful and forgiving, “Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep” (John 21:17b), meaning that Jesus did not give up on Peter. He knew Peter would be restored and be used by God to bring many into the kingdom. He can do the same with us, so draw comfort from Jesus’ everlasting mercy and strength that He will restore you too after a fall from grace. How great is our God!
