5 Stories From The Bible To Read When You’re Lonely

Here are 5 stories from the Bible you can read when you’re feeling lonely.

Forsaken

None have been forsaken like Jesus Christ was forsaken, particularly when He went through the Passion.  The disciples had fled.  The once-believing Jews abandoned Him.  His own people cried out “Crucify Him, Crucify Him” (Luke 23:21), so it’s no wonder that at the cross, Jesus cried out, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me” (Matthew 27:26b)?  Even the Father withdrew at that time since He cannot even look upon sin, especially since Jesus had taken upon Himself the sins of the world.  Although Jesus Himself never sinned, even the Father withdrew for a time.  That took place during the three-hour period of darkness where Jesus hung dying.

Deserted

Even though everyone else had forsaken Paul (2 Timothy 4:10), Paul could say, “Luke alone is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is very useful to me for ministry” (2 Timothy 4:11). When Paul was imprisoned, he said that “no one came to stand by me, but all deserted me. May it not be charged against them” (2 Timothy 4:16), but He was never really alone since he said, “the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it” (2 Timothy 4:17).

I Am With You

We tend to fear as creatures.  We are easily dismayed when things go wrote, but God tells us that He is our God and He will strengthen us and help us.  Even when all others have forsaken us, God never will. He says, “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41:10).

Till the End

Even though Jesus had returned to the Father and the disciples were on their own, Jesus told them to go and preach the gospel, going into all the world (Matthew 28:19-20a), but in a comforting statement, the Lord said, “And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20b). He might not have been with them physically as they went into all the world, but He was always with them in Spirit, and would be, even to the end of their labors.

He Takes You In

At times, King David’s family had forsaken him and turned against him, trying to kill him so that they could have the throne, so David knew what it was like to be alone.  Despite this, his faith was strong, for he knew that even if “my father and my mother have forsaken me… the Lord will take me in” (Psalm 27:10).  God was His Father, and He will never forsake him…or us.

If someone you know is experiencing a time of loneliness, please share these with them so that they might receive the comfort of God that can only come from His Word, the Bible.
