5 Stories From The Bible To Read When You’re Afraid
Here are 5 stories from the Bible to read when you’re afraid.
Love and Self-Control
When we obey God, we show we love God, for those who love Him strive to obey Him. Living in obedience also frees us from the guilt and shame of sin since we can confess our sins and be cleansed (1 John 1:9), but “God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control” (2 Timothy 1:7). Through His Spirit we can resist the Devil, and we do this by submitting to God (James 4:7). Not just when we’re afraid, but especially when we’re afraid!
Seek the Lord
The time to seek the Lord is not just when everything’s going fine, but when you’re afraid. When you read the psalms, you can tell the psalmist lived in fear at times, but he said, “I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears” (Psalm 34:4). God alone can deliver you from your fears, but He may use His Word to do it. Read the psalms and see how the psalmist dealt with issues of life and death, and yet passed through his valley of fear, and entered into a time and place of praise.
Being Upheld
How often have you felt the unseen hand of God holding you up during great difficulties or trials in your life? The Word of God encourages us to trust in Him and “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41:10). If you’re being upheld by His righteous right hand, what’s to fear?
Love verses Fear
Fear may be the enemy of trust, because fear says, “I don’t trust what the future holds,” but “There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love” (1 John 4:18). The wrath that was due upon us was taken upon Himself in Jesus Christ. The fear of punishment is over. Don’t think God’s punishing you with trials in life; He may be purifying you, not punishing you. There’s nothing to fear from God.
The Shadow of Death
I saw a great bolder come crashing down a mountain on the TV news the other day. I’d hate to be in its path. A few people had a brush with it, as it caromed off the front end of their car. Perhaps they could identify with the psalmist who lived with the constant threat and fear of death and wrote, “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me” (Psalm 23:4a). I’d rather get hit by the shadow of a giant boulder than the boulder itself, so the shadow of death is not as bad as the reality.
