5 Stories From The Bible To Read When You’re Sad

Here are 5 stories from the Bible to read when you’re feeling sad.

A Glad Heart

Can you believe that one simple, little smile can turn around a person’s day?  I know it can.  I’ve seen it, or even telling someone, “Thank you” can make their day, but “A glad heart makes a cheerful face, but by sorrow of heart the spirit is crushed” (Proverbs 15:13).  Whatever your face shows may be how others react.  A smile is just as contagious as a frown…so have a glad heart.  It starts with “a cheerful face.”

Comforting the Mourners

Many people go through a time of mourning after the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship, or a job loss, but the Lord Jesus Christ said, “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted” (Matthew 5:4).  The word “comfort” has as its meaning: “com” (with) and “fort” (strength), so it’s like a compound word “with strength.”  We can comfort others with the same comfort we’ve received from others (2 Corinthians 1:3-5).  God can use us as a means to comfort or give strength to people in their time of mourning.

Death Passes Away

The day is coming when God “will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away” (Revelation 21:4).  When you’re feeling sad, it’s time to think of the glad!  The goodness of God’s promises is that all pain, sorrow, suffering, and even death will end.  For us, it will be no more.

Near the Crushed

If you feel like everything is fine and you’re prospering and your health is good, consider this; “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:18).  No one I know has zero problems.  Life has its share of problems for everyone, regardless of their lot in life, so if you’re feeling sad, God is near the brokenhearted and will reach down and “save the crushed in spirit.”  Feeling crushed? God is near you!

Growing Weary

Do you sometimes feel underappreciated at work or by family or even at church, but if we don’t receive our rewards from others in this life, that’s okay; our great rewards come at the appearance of Christ, so “let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up” (Galatians 6:9). You are not serving and giving for people, but for an audience of One…the Lord our God.  What He sees is all that matters.
