5 Stories From The Bible For Suicidal Friends Or Family Members

Here are 5 stories from the Bible for suicidal friends, family members, co-workers, or even strangers.

Hope for the Future

One of the most frequently quoted verses in the Bible was actually written to Judah, but we can see from Scripture that this verse applies to us too. It is from Jeremiah the Prophet who wrote, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope” (Jeremiah 29:11). God’s plans for our future are for our very best, even if it looks hopeless now.  Remind your friend or family member that God is not finished with them yet.

He is With You

If you know someone who’s in a serious storm, suggest they read the promise that God gave to Joshua at a time of great transition; just after Moses’s death.  God reminded Joshua, and I believer He’d remind us too, that, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9).  He may not take you over the storm or around the storm, but He will go with you through the storm.

The Eyes of the Lord

If you have a family member or friend who feels like no one else cares, tell them that God’s watching their suffering because “The eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous and his ears toward their cry” (Psalm 34:15).  “The eyes of the Lord” are looking at your friend when they’re in the deep, dark night of the soul.  His ears are bent toward their cries.

The Heavy Laden

When someone you know has reached a low point in their life and they believe they can’t take anymore, tell them what Jesus said: “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28), and “Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls” (Matthew 11:29).  Your load might be hard and heavy, but Jesus says my “yoke is easy, and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:30).

Near the Brokenhearted

We return to Psalm 34 for another uplifting verse in the hopes of giving a person in despair some hope.  The Lord God, speaking through King David, said “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:18).  Are you brokenhearted? He’s near you.  Feel crushed in your spirit? He saves you. Run to Psalm 34 when you feel suicidal.

As painful as suicide is, God works out the worst things for our best (Gen 50:20; Rom 8:28), even when we don’t understand it, so please share these with someone else who’s gone through losing a loved one to suicide.
