5 Stories From The Bible About The New Year
Here are 5 stories from the Bible that relate to the New Year.
This is the Day
Every day is a gift. Maybe that’s why they call it the present, but this much is true. Every day you wake up, is another day that God has granted you life, so rejoice in the new day as the psalmist did, writing, “This is the day that the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it” (Psalm 118:24). The Lord made us and He made us for this day, so let’s “rejoice and be glad in it,” in the same way we’d rejoice with a New Year beginning.
Forget the Past
If we spend our life looking backward, we won’t focus on what’s ahead. Let all the troubles of the past remain in the past. Have the funeral. Bury the past, and “Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert” (Isaiah 43:18-19).
His Coming Nears
No one knows the day or the hour of Jesus’ return, so we must take heart that Jesus is one year closer to coming back that He was last year. It’s time to wake up and be useful for Christ, “Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed” (Romans 13:11).
A New Creation
A new year brings new opportunities, so imagine the opportunities now that we have been saved by God. God created man…but in Christ, He recreated man, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come” (2 Corinthians 5:17). This means he or she will have new desires and their wills will align with God’s will. They will look for opportunities to serve that God has previously appointed for us to walk in (Matthew 25:35-36, 40; Ephesians 2:1).
A Godly Daughter
We need rearview and side view mirrors in our vehicles to drive more safely, but we don’t depend on them to drive. We have to be looking forward, at least most of the time, so we can’t move forward in life while looking at the past. We must do what the Apostle Paul suggests, and that is, we need to be “forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:13b-14).
A new year brings a fresh perspective and new opportunities to life, so let us make the most of every year, redeeming the time, and let us all “Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil” (Ephesians 5:16)
