5 Stories From The Bible About Affairs and Adultery
Here are 5 stories from the Bible that relate to adultery and affairs.
Leads to Poverty
When a man or a woman has an affair or commits adultery, it will come with a great price tag. Often divorces are messy and it costs both sides. Some couples are even driven to near bankruptcy over the costs of the divorce, but more so, it breaks the law of God, so “for the price of a prostitute is only a loaf of bread, but a married woman hunts down a precious life” (Proverbs 6:26). Any sexual immorality leads to a path of poverty; either spiritual or financial, and often both.
Held in Honor
Marriage is the highest plain we can reach as far as human relationships are concerned. That’s why the author of Hebrews admonishes us to “Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous” (Hebrews 13:4). Any sex outside of marriage, no matter what excuse is used, will bring God’s judgment; either in this life, or the next, and maybe both.
Committing Adultery
Jesus narrowed down the reasons for divorce and it was for ongoing adultery. The innocent spouse is free to marry, but not so for the one who divorces his spouse and has committed adultery. Jesus would say to them, “whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery” (Matthew 19:9). That’s very black and white. It is only for sexual immorality (adultery) that a man or a woman can biblically divorce.
Getting Burned
The world is full of cause and effect, and it’s the same thing with relationships, particularly illicit ones. We can’t think we’re getting away with something if no one sees us. For one thing, God sees us. More than likely, a sexually immoral person will be found out in the end, so Solomon asks the rhetorical question, “Can a man carry fire next to his chest and his clothes not be burned” (Proverbs 6:27)? The obvious answer is no…someone’s going to get burned.
Adultery of the Heart
There is more to adultery than just the physical act. That’s why pornography is so destructive to marriage and families. Jesus says, “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart” (Matthew 5:27-28). Looking and lusting after someone who is not your spouse is just as bad as being in bed with them. Although the physical act is worse, even the thought of it is sin.
The train wrecks that adulterous affairs have left in their wake are awful. So many families have been ruined for a “heat of the moment” affair that forever changes the relationship with their spouse. It’s never quite the same again. You cannot unscramble an egg; what’s done is done, so it’s best to avoid any situation where the temptation arises for an adulterous affair.
