Here are 5 stories from the Bible that relate to alcohol.
Filled with the Spirit
Nothing good comes from drunkenness, and especially public drunkenness. That can land someone in jail, or worse, get someone hurt or killed. God commands us to “not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit” (Ephesians 5:18). The Apostle Paul means the Holy Spirit. If we’re filled with the Spirit, we’ll not as easily fulfill the desires of the flesh. The Spirit may be willing, but our flesh may not be, so being filled with the Spirit allows us to avoid the sin of drunkenness.
Strong Drink and Brawlers
I’ve heard people talk about a person who’s drunk as a “good drunk” while others were a “bad drunk.” They meant, they often ended up in fights and damaging something (a wall, a car, someone’s face), so the Proverb is true that “Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler, and whoever is led astray by it is not wise” (20:1).
No Inheritance
A child of God has a great inheritance from God. In the kingdom, we can only imagine what that might look like, but the Apostle Paul warned the church at Corinth that “thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God” (1 Corinthians 6:10). Someone might be battling alcohol problems all their lives, but after conversion, they begin to overcome it. They still may fall occasionally, but it’s not their life style, however, a professing child of God who lives in drunkenness, can have no assurance of salvation.
A Brother to Stumble
If we invited someone over for dinner, and we knew they had battled alcoholism most of their life, the last thing we’d want to do is to serve wine, or any other alcoholic beverage. It may not be sin for us and our own conscience may not convict us of having a glass of wine at dinner, but it may offend or cause to offend a person who has come out of alcoholism. That’s last thing on earth we’d ever want to do. We might be the cause of them falling back into it, so “It is good not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything that causes your brother to stumble” (Romans 14:21).
Having doubts
I believe if we have doubts, we shouldn’t do it, no matter what it is. Paul says that “whoever has doubts is condemned if he eats, because the eating is not from faith. For whatever does not proceed from faith is sin” (Romans 14:23). If our conscience is troubled by drinking alcohol, especially more than one drink, then we should stop. If it doesn’t proceed from faith in our minds, then it is sin.
Timothy had frequent stomach issues. Perhaps it was part of his being in the leadership of the church, so Paul tells him, “No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments” (1 Timothy 5:23). I believe we overstress the “drink wine part” and not the “little wine” part, but the best advice is; in all things, moderation.
