5 Stories From The Bible About The Appearance Of Evil
Here are 5 stories from the Bible about The Appearance Of Evil.
Appearing Evil
Even though we have freedom in Christ for many things, we cannot use that freedom to be a stumbling block to our brothers or sisters. Even if something is fine in our own conscience, it may not be in someone else’s eyes. A Christian who drinks must be careful and remember to “Abstain from every form of evil” (1 Thessalonians 5:22), and knowing drunkenness is evil, we should never risk falling into this sin. Even a casual drink might appear evil to someone who doesn’t believe in drinking alcohol.
Rescued from Evil
The Apostle Paul was rescued many times from death, and now, in his last letter, a sort of last will and testament, Paul reminds us of his confidence in God, writing, “The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed and bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory forever and ever. Amen” (2 Timothy 4:18). The word “will” is future tense, so that means what’s ahead of Paul, God’s got his back. God is no respecter of persons; if He rescued Paul from all of the evil, then He will rescue us from it too. We just may not know when.
Bringing Forth Evil
When we’re tired, hungry, in pain, or overcome by major problems, our mouths can easily reveal what’s in our hearts. It’s like the well; what’s deep in the well is brought out into the open. For some it’s bitter…for some, it’s sweet. And so it is with human hearts. Jesus said, “The good person out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure brings forth evil” (Matthew 12:35). In time, people will know what’s in our heart by what comes out of our mouth. What a sobering thought!
Avoiding Evil
The best way to avoid evil is to start your day in the Word of God. The Word will be as a lamp for your feet and a guide to your path (Psalm 119:105). You’ll be better equipped to see the ditches on both sides and stay on the straight. Solomon knew that and wrote, “Do not swerve to the right or to the left; turn your foot away from evil” (Proverbs 4:27).
Above Evil
To be above reproach is to be above anything evil. That means, you have a clear and clean conscience and nothing anyone can find out about you will create controversy or reproach for you or for the name of Christ (if you’re a believer). A scandal is magnified 100 times over if it’s a church leader who’s fallen into evil. When the Apostle Paul was speaking about the godly characteristics of a man, this was within the context of choosing church leaders. That’s why Paul the elder or pastor should be “above reproach, the husband of one wife, and his children are believers and not open to the charge of debauchery or insubordination” (Titus 1:6).
The best way to avoid evil is to pray and read your Bible every day. It sounds too simple, but when you get into the Word of God, the Word of God gets into you, and that’s a great resource to draw upon when the appearance of evil shows up.
