5 Stories From The Bible About Balance
Here are 5 stories from the Bible about balance.
Work and Rest
When the Apostle John was addressing the church, he wrote, “Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul” (2 John 1:2). The context of this verse is not referring to church members prospering financially, but to be in good health and that all would go well with their souls. For that to happen, they should have a proper daily balance of prayer, study and reading of God’s Word. If they did that, everything else would be taken care of.
Fairly Balanced
If there’s one thing that God hates, it’s scales that have been tampered with. It’s just another form of robbery, so God commands us all that “You shall have just balances, just weights, a just ephah, and a just hin: I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt” (Leviticus 19:36). The “hin” is a very small weight, but even here, God does not care about the amount. Robbery is wrong, no matter how big or small. There should always be an equal or fair exchange for products/services and the money you pay for them.
Humanity’s Balance
Society looks at those who have popularity, wealth, or fame as being more important than the rest of us. That’s why they get the news reports if something goes wrong…they seem to matter more in the eyes of the world than we do, but not so with God. The psalmist wrote, “Those of low estate are but a breath; those of high estate are a delusion; in the balances they go up; they are together lighter than a breath” (Psalm 62:9). God is no respecter of persons, rich or poor, slave or free, male or female, old or young, because they all go out in the world the same way they came in…with nothing.
Self-Control
Having self-control is of great value to God. Solomon wrote, “Whoever is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city” (Proverbs 16:32), showing us that it’s not easy to control our passions, urges, and desires, however “God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control” (2 Timothy 1:7).
The Right Priority
Our lives will have no balance at all if we are not seeking God and His Word and praying on a daily basis. Jesus tells us where our priorities must be. He says we are to “seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you” (Matthew 6:33). If your relationships are not right; if your bank balance looks shaky; or if your health is in danger, we are told to seek the kingdom of God above all, but not only that; we are to seek His righteousness, and that is found only in Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 5:21).
Having a proper balance in life means we get sufficient rest (not too much), we get sufficient nourishment (not too much), and we stay in fellowship with God, His people, and His Word (never too much!).
