5 Stories From The Bible About Burdens

Here are 5 stories from the Bible about burdens in life.

Come to Jesus

Jesus is waiting for those who are trying unsuccessfully to carry their own burdens, as if they were some sort of human wheel barrow, but Jesus says, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls” (Matthew 11:28-29).  Simple lesson: His broad shoulders can bear what ours cannot.

Bearing Burdens

I love how Christians rejoice with others when they rejoice, and mourn with those who mourn.  Scripture tells us to “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2).  A joy shared is doubled; a sorrow shared is halved.  Jesus shared our sin-burden.   Can we not share one another’s burdens?

Casting Burdens Away

The psalmist’s recommendation is to “Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved” (Psalm 55:22).  The word “cast” is just like that of tossing something away from you, like tossing a heavy rock away that you’ve been carrying.  That’s what our Lord is waiting for us to do.  Are we carrying our burdens or are we casting our burden onto the LORD?

Casting Anxieties Away

It takes humility to see that you can’t make it on your own.   It takes a humble heart to acknowledge that you need God, and that squares with Scripture which says, “Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you” (1 Peter 5:6-7).  Once again, we have to be casting all our anxieties on him and stop trying to carry them ourselves.

Praying About Burdens

One man told his pastor, “I just can’t seem to get rid of these burdens on my shoulders.”  The pastor asked him, “Have you prayed about it?” He quoted the Apostle Paul: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God” (Philippians 4:6). What you can’t change, pray about it; what you can change, change it!

If you’re carrying a heavy load all by yourself, you’re going to get hurt.  You may be able to go it alone for a while, but eventually, you must come to Jesus and unload every burden and care upon Him.  He is willing to listen to you right now, so what’s stopping you?  Humble yourself before the mighty Hand of God and He will lift you up and lift your burden from off your shoulders.  Give it to Him.  We know that “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1), so why not cry out to Him today and let Him be that “very present help in trouble?”
