Devotional: 6 Simple Ways to Make Other People Feel Great
It’s easy to think that you’re a great person based on how good you feel or have a high valuation of yourself based on your personal accomplishments and achievements. However, the true mark of a great person is how well you make other people feel around you.
Unfortunately, we think that it takes too much effort to make other people feel great. The good news is that it’s not as hard as you may think. Here are six simple things you can do to make people feel good.
Remember to smile
Smiling is free. As the old saying goes, it takes more muscles to frown than to smile. Remember to smile because it’s infectious. When you smile, people can’t help but smile back or at least feel a little bit better.
Remember to help people even in the smallest ways
You don’t have travel around the world to become a missionary, work in a soup kitchen to give away free food to the homeless, or work for a non-profit to make an impact in people’s lives. You can help people by just remembering to do small stuff like holding a door open; helping push a car when you see a person’s car on the road. These are just very small things that you can do to help people around you feel great every single day.
Remember to greet people
Did you know that by simply saying hello and acknowledging people you make them feel better? Simply say, “Hi, how are you“and that small acknowledgment could be a blessing to someone. These small things can add up.
Walk around with an attitude of gratitude
When you’re always thankful, people can’t help but notice. Sadly, our world is filled with people who are focused only on what they can get. They only focus on their problems and how life has defeated them. When you walk around with a smile in your face and you’re thankful, it shows. People can’t help but gain some sense of perspective because we’re really all the same. We’re not all that different. If somebody can be happy, surely you can be happy too. That is the message they will get from your attitude of gratitude.
Focus on the positive side of people
You have to remember that every single human being on this planet is a child of God. God sees us as His flesh and blood. That means we are important and special. When you choose to look your brothers and sisters the way God sees them, you will always be able to see their positive side. You will always be able to see their potential instead of their shortcomings. You will be able to see what’s good about them instead of what’s wrong with them.
Constantly encourage others
When you encourage people, they get reenergized. They feel that whatever they’re doing is worthwhile. Constantly give positive feedback and help people with your encouragement. Every little bit helps because every word of encouragement is like a seed that’s planted. Eventually it will grow. Never underestimate the power of a kind word.
Conclusion
Making other people feel great and making the world a better place is not some high-concept project. It only takes very small everyday acts to make it happen. Do your part today by reflecting the Holy Spirit that is in your heart to the people around you.
Make no mistake about it, the mark of real Christian is when your life reflects the mark of the Holy Spirit. When you are truly born again, you become a kinder, gentler person just as Jesus is a kind and gentle God. When He abides in you, you absorb His character traits. This is very hard to fake; you cannot rely on your own strength. The good news is that you don’t have to. You simply have to let the Holy Spirit take over. With the Holy Spirit, your life becomes a walking billboard for God’s transformative grace and you only need to let it happen.
