Devotional: 5 Truths About God’s Calling in Your Life
It’s very common in our modern age to look at serving God and serving others outside of our self as inconvenient. In many cases, following God’s will in our lives is often miscast as some sort of a necessary ordeal or suffering.
Well, the good news is that serving God doesn’t have to be an ordeal, it doesn’t have to be a hassle, and it doesn’t have to be inconvenient. It may seem that the closer you get to God, the more challenges you encounter, but keep reading below for the five truths about God’s calling in your life.
God doesn’t necessarily call the equipped
One common misconception about Christian service is that God calls people that are naturally talented to spread the word. He would call out those who are great with people or who are great speakers or who are naturally adventurous.
The reality is when you read the Bible, this is not always the case. In fact, time and time again, God would look at people not with human eyes but through divine eyes. This is why God chose David instead of his oldest brother. This is why God chose Gideon to lead the Israelites.
God’s view is not your view so you might not think that you’re up to the job but guess what? It’s God making the call and you just have to trust him.
But God is sure to equip the called
When God calls you, don’t think that he requires you to rely on your strength. He knows that’s impossible. He knew that when he called Gideon to lead the war against the enemies of Israel, that Gideon was scared, had low self-esteem, and had low self-confidence. There was nothing there in terms of Gideon’s inner strength. But guess what? God equipped him with the inner strength and the inner passion to lead a massive victory against the enemy of God’s people.
That’s a very dramatic example of how God is sure to equip those he calls. So if you feel that God is calling you to witness for him but your feel like you’re really shy, don’t worry about it. Lay your trust on God and he will give you the equipment that you need.
Being called is a test of submission to God’s will
The story of the prophet Jonah highlights the importance of submitting to God’s will. When God calls you, it’s really a test of your faith. Are you going to go in your own way or are you going to surrender to God?
It may seem impossible. It may seem that you will be subjected to a lot of ridicule, and there’s a high chance that you might look like a fool. But if you trust in God’s will, things will turn out well.
Every Christian has a calling to God’s service
One of the last commands from Jesus’ lips is to spread the word to all people regardless of where they’re from, what they look like, or what their language is. We are called to this great commission. All of us are called to witness.
The good news is that we don’t have to hop on a boat and travel to the other side of the planet. We can start witnessing to our own family members as well as to our co-workers and our friends. You have a calling.
There is no hierarchy in God’s service
When you serve God, always remember that there is no such thing as a small job. Maybe your job is to be an usher or maybe your job is to clean up after service or mop the floor. It doesn’t matter.
God was very clear in the Book of Corinthians that God looks at his church as a human body. Meaning that the eye is worthless when the feet are gone, and that the brain is only important when other parts are present.
So just because you feel that you have a “small job,” don’t ever feel that God looks at you any less. Every job dedicated to God’s service is very important. The key here is to develop a servant’s heart that you’re not doing this for stature in the eyes of other people, but you’re doing it because you love Jesus Christ.
