Charles Spurgeon
Here’s why I believe Charles Spurgeon is right in that he believed that prayer can never be in excess or we can pray too much.
Praying Always
Paul commanded the church to “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” (1 Thess 5:16-18) but what does this look like? How can I work and pray? How can I read and pray? How can I…you get the picture. The Prince of Preachers, Charles Spurgeon is right….prayer can never be in excess or we can never pray too much. It is usually too little. Pray and given thanks before meals, after a flat tire, during trials, when given a gift…and as Paul says, rejoice, pray, and “give thanks in all circumstances.” Pray while you’re waiting in line…before you get out of bed, while you’re in the shower, when you are driving…anytime is a good time to pray and to do it without ceasing means to do it whenever and wherever you can.
Pray as you Go
I touched on this somewhat already but when I am driving, I am in prayer. When I am preparing a sermon or before listening to one, I pray. I pray anytime that I have both the time and the ability to. Praying on the go for missionaries, praying before I give an offering, and praying while I am thinking how to respond to someone who has been unkind to me and you should even pray when you are going to witness to someone about Christ to say the right thing.
Praying for Family and for the Lost
Charles Spurgeon was one of the greatest men of prayer that I know of so what better use of prayer is there than to pray for someone in your family like your spouse, your children, your unsaved and saved friends, your neighbors who know and don’t know Christ and praying for those you don’t even know that you’ll meet that they might know Christ and Him crucified. Prayer is not the least that we can do…it is the very most we can do.
Conclusion
Don’t ever give up on praying because if you do, you are losing contact with the One Who knows each of one of the stars by name and Who created them by His Word. Pray always, pray constantly, pray for those who are and are not saved because prayer can never be in excess.
