4 Reasons Christians Need Not Fear the Devil

“I’m not afraid of the devil. He can’t handle the One to whom I’m joined.”

– A.W. Tozer

Supplanting His Rulership

God loves us, but Satan hates us and would love nothing more than to destroy us, which, of course, he cannot do. The only thing he can do is try to make our life more miserable and take away our joy and testimony for Christ. However, we need not fear him because the prince of this world was judged, and Jesus said as much before Calvary: “Now is the judgment of this world; now will the ruler of this world be cast out” (John 12:31) and “… because the ruler of this world is judged” (John 16:11). Remember that God had given man dominion over the earth, saying, “And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth” (Gen. 1:26).

No Match for God

We are no match for Satan since this invisible foe is much stronger than we are, but for those who are joined to God through the reconciling work of Christ, we don’t fight for victory–we fight from victory. Even so, Paul told us that we must “put on the full armor of God” (Eph. 6:11a), “so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” (Eph. 6:11b-12). God has equipped us with every spiritual weapon necessary (Eph. 6:14-17). So all we need do is “put on the full armor of God” (Eph. 6:13).

Greater Is He Who Is Within You

We have no cause to fear from “the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already” (1 John 4:3) because “you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world” (1 John 4:4). The Bible is clear that “everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith” (1 John 5:4).

Failed Coup Attempt

Satan was so full of himself that he deceived himself into thinking that he could even take over the very throne of God, saying in his heart, “I will ascend to heaven; above the stars of God I will set my throne on high; I will sit on the mount of assembly in the far reaches of the north” (Isaiah 14:13). Of course, he failed, and “the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him” (Rev. 12:9).

Conclusion

Today, we are secure in Christ if we have repented and trusted in Him, and nothing or no one shall pluck us out of God’s hands (John 10:28-29). Not even life or death can prevail against us or separate us from God (Rom. 8:37-39), and that’s why the good news is just that: good news. No, it is the best of news!
