Yes and Amen
Paul wrote that “all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory” (2nd Cor 1:20). The promises of God are for eternal life for all who believe in the Son of God (John 3:16). The promises are found “in him” meaning found in Jesus Christ. It is through Him and Him alone (John 6:44; Acts 4:12) that we can bring our “Amens” into God’s presence.
Unbreakable
In the ancient world, kings would send documents with the king’s seal on them. The envelope would be sealed by hot wax and then the king’s signature impression from his ring would guarantee that it would remain closed until the rightful party received it. In this way, the king’s documents and written commands couldn’t be substituted or watered down. If the seal was broken, the carrier would be killed. With that in mind, and I believe Paul had this in mind, he wrote “In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory” (Eph 1:13-14).
Awesome
One of the most incredible promises of God comes just prior to Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead and He tells Martha, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this” (John 11:25-26). What is so awesome about our God is that He is patient with us. Many of us didn’t come to faith until late in life so Second Peter 3:9 has special meaning to us as it says, “The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.”
Conclusion
God never did make any promise that was too good to be true. On the contrary, His promises are almost too good to be true but in fact they are true. Jesus affirms, “Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death” (John 8:51). Is that not an amazing promise? Mr. Moody, you are right sir; God never made a promise that was too good to be true.
