3 Deeds Done Better

“Small deeds done are better than great deeds planned.”

– Peter Marshall

A Little Means a Lot

A little can mean a lot. A crumb dropped on the ground becomes feast for the ants. Jesus said, “Whoever gives one of these little ones even a cup of cold water because he is a disciple, truly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward” (Matt. 10:42). I remember a 100-degree day when the sanitation workers were covered in sweat, so I went out and gave them all a cold bottle of water. That was nothing to me, but it meant a lot to them. Just a small “thank you” or “that’s a job well done” can make all the difference in that person’s day.

Spontaneous Generosity

Pastor Chip Ingram once said, “Never resist a generous impulse.” In his book “The Genius of Generosity,” he recalls a time when he was moved with compassion, like in one case where a tearful young mother of three was searching through her purse trying to come up with enough money to pay for her groceries. Obviously, she was distraught and embarrassed (with the people in line behind her). This pastor thought about this woman’s state, so he reached into his billfold and, after looking at the total, gave the cashier enough to pay for it all. The young mother wept with gratitude and thanked him. Pastor Ingram never said who he was.

It All Adds Up

I told my young daughter that we can move mountains with our bare hands. When she playfully scoffed at me, I told her, “We can move a mountain, but we must do it one rock at a time.” I was trying to teach her something about perseverance and not giving up. I wanted her to understand that some things take time, some a lot of time, but God is faithful and will not forget what we do for Christ here on Earth. Let me leave you with this precious promise from God: “For God is not unjust so as to overlook your work and the love that you have shown for his name in serving the saints, as you still do” (Heb. 6:10).

Conclusion

If you tell others the good you do, God will forget it. But if you forget it, God will remember. Mr. Marshall is exactly right by saying that small deeds done are better than great deeds planned because small things make a difference. They make an immediate impact, and God will not forget what we do in secret for the glory of God.
