When Men Do Nothing
Last century the Nazis started rounding up Jews, gypsies, and those with disabilities in trying to supposedly “purify” the race of mankind as they desired to have a “super race” of people. When they started rounding up the Jews, no one said anything. When they began to capture vagabonds, homeless people, people with disabilities, and gypsies, no one said anything. When the churches remained silent, the sermons were muffled. After a while it was too late. So when men do nothing, they fall for anything.
When the Righteous Are Silent
When the righteous remain silent, all hell can break loose. King Solomon wrote, “When the righteous increase, the people rejoice, but when the wicked rule, the people groan” (Proverbs 29:2), and “When it goes well with the righteous, the city rejoices, and when the wicked perish there are shouts of gladness” (Proverbs 11:10). I believe the reason that abortion is legal today is because most Christians didn’t speak up and call their congress representatives. When it seems that we can do nothing at all, nothing at all is all we do. We must stand up for what is right and call out those who do wrong in society; otherwise, we’ll fall for anything, like abortion!
Stand for Something or Fall for Anything
If we don’t stand for something, we’ll fall for anything. And that’s just what has happened in our society today as we see sexual immorality splattered across the Internet and TV and in video games. The same thing goes with violence. When few people stood up against this evil, the evil grew. We are to be salt and light to this sick and dying world, but we often don’t get the salt out of the shaker. We know that we ought to obey God over man (Acts 5:29), but frequently we just ignore it. However, ignoring something doesn’t mean it goes away. Cancer is a good example.
Conclusion
Peter Marshall, in saying that unless we stand for something, we shall fall for anything, was trying to warn us that doing nothing is the same as condoning what’s going on around us. By our sin of omission or our sin of silence, the wicked rule and the righteous do little about it.
