Even though He slay Me
Job had trust or blind faith in a God he couldn’t see and said even “Though he slay me, I will hope in him” (Job 13:15a), so even though Job had lost his 10 children and every possession, and later, even his friends turned on him, Job trusted in God. He knew that God was worthy of His trust, regardless of whether he was losing everything or was being blessed greatly. God blessed Job more at the end than he had in the beginning…because Job finally repented of his self-righteousness and saw himself for what he was.
All things work Together
The Apostle Paul tells us to rest in the fact “that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose” (Rom 8:28). It may not feel like it at the time but God’s promise is ironclad. It doesn’t disappear with time or circumstances. Even Joseph who was treated harshly and unfairly knew that God can use evil for His own good (Gen 50:20). Just look at the cross.
Who do you Trust?
Years ago, I listened to a friend’s advice and made a bad decision as a result. I should have realized it at the time but I was taking the advice of someone that wasn’t saved and didn’t have the Spirit of God. Today, I don’t trust advice outside of the family of God but also, I don’t trust my own reasoning. Solomon told us long ago that we should “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths” (Prov 3:5). When I leaned on my friend’s advice and my own understanding, I had nothing to lean on but air and I was sure to fall.
The proper place for Trust
The psalms have more in them about trust than any other single book in the Bible, by far (53 times). Perhaps it was because David, who wrote many of the psalms, had no other choice but to trust God. If he looked only at his circumstances, he would have been despondent, so his advice is in his prayer, “O my God, in you I trust; let me not be put to shame; let not my enemies exult over me” (Psalm 25:2). Whoever trusts in God will not be ashamed because He is fully worthy of all of our trust.
Conclusion
The point is that God never disappoints anyone who places their trust in Him because through good and bad, He knows what He’s doing; we can know that it will all work out for our very best; we can lean on His understanding and not our own; and Who better than to place our trust in than in the sovereign, omnipotent (all-powerful) God?
