5 Stories From The Bible About Aggravation
Here are 5 stories from the Bible that relate to aggravation.
Pray for Deliverance
When Jesus taught the disciples how to pray, He specifically asked them to pray that God would “lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil” (Matthew 6:13). Of course, God doesn’t tempt anyone or lead anyone into temptation (James 1:13), but what the best translations say is we are to ask God to deliver us from too strong of a temptation, and make a way of escape for us, and by the way, which He does promise to do (1 Corinthians 10:13). When you begin to get aggravated, pray for deliverance from the temptation to say or do something you’ll regret.
Kill the Pride
When things don’t go our way, we get sometimes agitated, and then aggravation sets in, but it’s a good reminder that “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall” (Proverbs 16:18). It might be our pride that is behind our aggravation. Besides, pride always ends badly for us, especially knowing that God is opposed to the proud (James 4:6). God may be trying to teach us patience in order to humble us. God will respond positively to humility, but not so with the proud.
Unrighteous Indignation
There is a time to get angry, if it’s for the right reason, and the things that make God angry should anger us to, but up to a point. Seeing someone abused should make us good and mad, and we should step in, but in other things that are out of our control, we have to learn to trust God with vengeance (Romans 12:19). I think it’s best that we don’t take matters into our own hands. The psalmist writes, “Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath! Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil” (Psalm 37:8). The wrath of man rarely leads to good; more often it leads to evil.
Righteous Indignation
As I said before, we can be good and mad and not be sinning. Some things in this world ought to make us angry. I get aggravated at the sin in the world and the suffering that it all brings, but we can’t take that to bed with us. The Apostle Paul says, “Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger” (Ephesians 4:26). That is, don’t let it stew. Get over it. Do what you can and leave the rest up to God.
Never Forsakes Us
I’ve known some very patient people. Job is a good example, and even though I never knew him, I thought, “I likely couldn’t go through what he went through.” You’ve heard of the proverbial saying, “Having the patience of Job,” but Job does show strength of character. Solomon wrote, “Whoever is slow to anger has great understanding, but he who has a hasty temper exalts folly” (Proverbs 14:29).
If you grow aggravated, like being stuck in traffic, use the time to pray, “Lord, deliver me from this aggravation before I do something that is sinful and say or do something that I’ll later regret.” I believe God will not only hear that prayer, but He’ll answer it too and deliver you from that temptation.
