His Quiver Full
The phrase, “He’s got his quiver full of arrows” comes straight from Scripture where the psalmist wrote, “Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one’s youth. Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them! He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gate” (Psalm 127:3-5). What man or woman wouldn’t be blessed since children is essentially a gift from God (Psalm 127:3-4).
His Victory
Right after the Lord delivered David out of the enemies hands, he wrote that God “sent out arrows and scattered them; lightning, and routed them” (2 Samuel 22:15), so the victory belonged to the Lord and not to David. The “arm of flesh” will fail us every time (Jeremiah 17:5), because as God says, it is “Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the LORD of hosts” (Zechariah 4:6).
Facing Mischief
There are all kinds of mischief out there today: Scams, schemes, defrauding, phishing, and such as this, so we’ve got to be careful, but the psalmist worried little about his own life, saying even “Though they plan evil against you, though they devise mischief, they will not succeed. For you will put them to flight; you will aim at their faces with your bows” (Psalm 21:11-12). That’s looking danger right in the eye and not blinking, but it’s only because of the One Who is with us, being greater than he who is in the world (1 John 4:4).
A Random Arrow
God was going to deal with Israel’s King Jehoshaphat and cut off his reign, so even though the king was heavily armored, “a certain man drew his bow at random and struck the king of Israel between the scale armor and the breastplate” (1 Kings 22:34a). The point is this; the king may have felt protected by his own armor, but it is God alone Who protects us. It might have seemed that the arrow found the king by chance, but nothing happens that is outside of the will of God, and this was His will.
Shattering His Adversaries
We know from the story of the Exodus, that nothing is too hard for God, for “God brings him out of Egypt and is for him like the horns of the wild ox; he shall eat up the nations, his adversaries, and shall break their bones in pieces and pierce them through with his arrows” (Numbers 24:8). Notice that these are “his arrows” and not the arrows of man, therefore, it is to God be the glory for all of the marvelous things He has done (Psalm 115:1).
Arrows are often signs of strength, power, and reach, and God has all three; He alone is omnipotent and sends the arrows where He wills, and from history we know that God sometimes uses nations to discipline or punish other nations, as He did with ancient Israel.
