5 Stories From The Bible About Celebrations
Here are 5 stories from the Bible about celebrations.
A Day for Gladness
It was shortly after the Jews were spared from certain death by an evil plot that all of “the Jews of the villages, who live in the rural towns, hold the fourteenth day of the month of Adar as a day for gladness and feasting, as a holiday, and as a day on which they send gifts of food to one another” (Esther 9:19). Who could blame them? By God’s providence, Queen Esther stepped up and saved the Jews, so it was a day for gladness and a time to celebrate because the Jewish people would not be annihilated.
Celebrate and Be Glad
After the Prodigal Son returned, the oldest son was angry. He had been faithful all those years, but the son had squandered his inheritance. Even so, the father said to his oldest son, “It was fitting to celebrate and be glad, for this your brother was dead, and is alive; he was lost, and is found” (Luke 15:32). Some of the most joyous occasions for me are when I hear someone’s been saved. I rejoice with the angels in heaven, and it’s both right and proper to celebrate such a new birth!
Praise in His Sanctuary
When we come together in corporate worship, we ought to “Praise the Lord! Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens” (Psalm 150:1), for He is most worthy! That’s what worship is…giving to God what is His worth, so we ought to celebrate together the victory that Christ has won through Calvary.
Celebrate Together
It’s no fun to keep good news to one’s own self. Your first inclination is to share the good news and celebrate, isn’t it? Isn’t celebrating together with others more fun that celebrating alone? Can you even celebrate if you don’t have someone to share your good news with, but there’s most certainly a time to say, Lets “bring the fattened calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate” (Luke 15:23).
Praying About Burdens
The day is coming when the Lord our God, Jesus Christ, will say to some, “Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master” (Matthew 25:21), and try to imagine what joy that must be! It’s hard to wrap my mind around today about what awaits the children of God when the New Jerusalem descends out of heaven (Revelation 21:1-2).
Celebrations are more fun when shared, and the good news we have to share brings is the greatest news there is. A person who was dead in their sins but made alive by the Spirit of God (Ephesians 2:1-4) is worth celebrating. So are wedding anniversaries, birthdays and other special occasions, but most of all, we should celebrate when someone has been born again by the Spirit of God (John 3:4-8).
