5 Stories From The Bible About the Apostles
Here are 5 stories from the Bible about the apostles.
The Appointed
It was Jesus Christ, Who after praying all night, chose the twelve apostles. Contrary to what they might have thought, they did not choose Him, but He chose them! The Scripture says that Jesus “appointed twelve (whom he also named apostles) so that they might be with him and he might send them out to preach” (Mark 3:14). The word “appointment” in the Greek means it was determined or really, predetermined and fixed by God to occur ahead of time, so this was no random set of circumstances when Jesus called the twelve apostles.
The Members
Notice in the 4th chapter of Ephesians that it is God Who commissions and appoints and places those in the Body of Christ as He sees fit. He always knows best, and in fact, He had already determined who would be in which part of the Body of Christ, the church. The Scripture say that God “gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers” (Ephesians 4:11). Why does it say “he gave” them? God gave them to the church “to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ” (Ephesians 4:12).
The Chosen
For many years, I was part of the “frozen chosen” and not active in the Body of Christ, but then I saw I that the Great Commission was not just given to the apostles; it was given as an imperative command given to all of us (Matthew 28:18-20), but in order to keep us humble, we must ask ourselves: “Did we really choose Jesus?” Just as He told the apostles, He would tell us: “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide” (John 15:16a), so has He chosen us “from before the foundation of the world” (Ephesians 1:4).
The Commissioned
For most Christians, it’s not possible to go into all the world, but we can at least go next door; or share Christ with a co-worker, family member, or friend. There is no plan B in proclaiming Christ to the lost. Jesus told the apostles, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation” (Mark 16:15), but since they’re gone, we must take up the torch and share the Light of the World, which is living in darkness.
The Foundation
The church is like a building. God has been building upon it for thousands of years, and if you’ve trusted in Christ, “you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God” (Ephesians 2:19), but the foundation has already been laid. That explains why there are no more apostles today since we all are being “built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone” (Ephesians 2:20).
Many today are self-proclaimed apostles, but be very careful. It was God Who chose the 12 apostles and God alone Who chooses leaders to be in the Body of Christ. It is God Who appoints and places those of us within the Body of Christ, and we can certainly trust God with that.
