5 Stories From The Bible About Action
Here are 5 stories from the Bible that relate to our taking action.
To Do Good
It’s so easy for us to turn a blind eye to the needs of others. Mainly because there are so many who are in need, but the Apostle John says that “if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him” (1 John 3:17)? Everything we have we have from God (1 Corinthians 4:7), so how can we look the other way when someone needs our help?
Oppressing the Poor
We can help the poor directly, but we can also be a mouthpiece for the poor who are being abused by the world’s system. The Word of God commands us to “Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute” (Proverbs 31:8). They may have no voice of their own, so be a voice for them…a voice for change, and a voice that speaks up against injustice against the poor, and the oppressors that “Whoever oppresses a poor man insults his Maker, but he who is generous to the needy honors him” (Proverbs 14:31).
Provide for the Poor
James asks a question that each of us should ask ourselves: “If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that” (James 2:15-16). That’s like telling someone you’ll pray for them and then do nothing for them. What good is that!?
Contending for the Faith
Even though Jude said, “I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints” (Jude 1:3). It was made necessary because many had crept in with deceitful doctrines of demons and denied the divinity of Jesus Christ our Lord (Jude 1:4). We too must contend for the faith if we hear or see error. Stick to the original gospel Jesus brought, which included the command to repent and believe (Mark 1:15). Don’t believe anything else.
A Doer Who Acts
We cannot be saved by the law, but that doesn’t mean we ignore the law. If we break it, it can break us, “But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing” (James 1:25). All too often, I’m more of a “hearer who forgets” than “a doer who acts,” and that’s my loss because only then will I be blessed in what I’m doing.
Action speaks much louder than words. Words can come so easy, but backing up those words with action gives credence to our words, so let your answer be “Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil” (Matthew 5:37).
