Here are 5 stories from the Bible about birds.
Let Birds Fly
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth so that the living creatures could have a home, so it is written that “God said, “Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the heavens” (Genesis 1:20). There are fewer things more magnificent that a bird in flight…an engineering marvel, yet nothing to God Who creates and says, “It was good” (Genesis 1:21, 25).
Birds of the Air
When Jesus pointed out the birds of the air, He was trying to compare their value to the disciples, saying, “Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they” (Matthew 6:26). Since we are of more value, will God not provide for us too, since He also provides for the less valued sparrows? The answer of course is yes…He will.
A Bird in the Nest
Many came to Jesus and desired to follow Him, but after a time, many who followed Him, followed Him no more (John 6:66), so it was not easy being a disciple of Jesus. To be associated with Him was to have others hate you, so after a scribe told Jesus, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go” (Matthew 8:19)…”Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head” (Matthew 8:20).
Straying from the Nest
There are many comparisons with a wayward man and a bird flying the coop. Solomon wrote, “Like a bird that strays from its nest is a man who strays from his home” (Proverbs 27:8). His point is that it’s not a good idea to stray from one’s home, any more than it is for a bird to stray from their nest. The context of Proverbs chapter 28 may be telling Solomon’s way of referring to someone having an adulterous affair, but either way, the results can be disastrous if we don’t stay in our own nest.
Worshipping Creation
Birds have such beauty and grace, but some nations from the ancient days worshipped them, and the Apostle Paul said, “Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things” (Romans 1:22-23). Egypt and many other nation’s worshipped birds of prey, but what they have done was to exchange worshipping God with worshipping nature.
Birds play an intricate role in the ecosystem, and each one of them has a valuable place in the world, but God values them too. God’s Word says that “Whoever is righteous has regard for the life of his beast, but the mercy of the wicked is cruel” (Proverbs 12:10). That could not be any clearer. God loves His creatures and so should we…first and foremost, one another (John 13:34-35).
