5 Stories From The Bible About the Apocalypse
Here are 5 stories from the Bible about the apocalypse.
The Revelation
The word apocalypse is Greek and this word literally means “revelation” or “an unveiling or unfolding of things not previously known,” and that’s where the Apostle John comes in. In the Book of Revelation (apocalypse) John writes that it is “The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show to his servants the things that must soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John” (Revelation 1:1). It is not John’s revelation, but the revelation (apocalypse) of Jesus Christ, Who will soon “show to his servants the things that must soon take place.”
The Hour
If someone tells you that they know the date when Jesus will return, tell them that Jesus said, “concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only” (Matthew 24:36). No one means no human can know the day or the hour of Jesus’ return; a time when He will be revealed (apocalypse) for the very first time to those who believe and those who have rejected Him.
In the Clouds
The Apostle John wrote down the revelation of Jesus Christ and said of Jesus, “Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all tribes of the earth will wail on account of him. Even so. Amen” (Revelation 1:7). Some will wail because they knew in their hearts that God existed (Romans 1:18-20) but still rejected Jesus Christ, and when Jesus comes in the clouds, this is not referring to meteorological clouds, but the Shekinah glory clouds that are always associated with the glory of God.
Signs of the Times
The times seem to indicate that our Lord could return at any moment, and indeed, Scripture says He will come like a thief in the night, but Jesus said before He returns, “nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places. (Matthew 24:7). I don’t need convincing that these things are escalating in the world today, but this thing I know for sure; He is nearer today than He was yesterday, and His coming is nearer with each passing day.
The Martyrs
There countless millions of Christians who have gone before us, giving their lives for their faith, but the time is coming when “the souls of those who had been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus and for the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years,” but for day, God has not revealed when that time will come (Revelation 20:4).
Someday God will be seen by everyone as the dead and the living shall all stand before Christ to give an account (Revelation 20:12-15). Some will be resurrected to everlasting life while others will be raised to everlasting shame and contempt. That makes today the best of days to put your trust in Christ (2 Corinthians 6:2), because tomorrow may be too late.
