5 Stories From The Bible About Being Strong
Here are 5 stories from the Bible about being strong.
Strong and Courageous
One of the places in the Bible where God commanded someone to be strong and courageous is in the Book of Joshua and said specifically to Joshua. Just after Moses had died, which was a great time of change, God told Joshua, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9). Wherever Joshua goes, God will go with Him, and we have that same promise from God.
Christ Strengthens You
Since the Apostle Paul correctly stated, “I can do all things through him who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13), the opposite must also be true. That is, we can do nothing without Christ. Jesus said, “apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:5b), and nothing is not a little “something.” This should humble us; we cannot do anything without Christ and only through Christ can we do all things. Of course, those “all things” must be within the will of God.
Strength through Weakness
Ironically, God is glorified through our weakness because He is shown strong. God shows His strength through our weaknesses. That makes no sense to the world, but Paul said it is “For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong” (2 Corinthians 12:1). Paul found strength in His weakness because he placed his contentment in Christ and not in circumstances. Otherwise, Paul would have been miserable living with “weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities.
Strength of His Might
I am not the strongest person physically, but later in life, I discovered that real strength is within. It’s not found in muscles but in character, and when we need to be strengthened by God, we are admonished to “be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might” (Ephesians 6:10). My strength will only last for a time, but God’s strength will endure where mine cannot. Depend on His strength and not the arm of flesh.
Upheld by God
Fear can make you tired. It can zap your strength and make you feel defeated, but the Word of God tells us, “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41:10). We’re never to be upheld by others, although we can encourage others, but God alone can uphold us with His “righteous right hand.”
We can be strong, only while we’re in the Lord. For those who haven’t trusted Christ, they’re trying to live their life in their own strength, and that won’t work for long. I would tell them, “Come to Christ and put your trust in Him, and receive His strength, knowing that you are eternally secure and safe in His and the Father’s hands” (John 10:28-29).
