5 Stories From The Bible About Advice
Here are 5 stories from the Bible that relate to taking or giving advice.
Fear of the Lord
We all need advice at one time or another, but the very best advice I can give you is that “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction” (Proverbs 1:7). The wisdom of God begins and ends with the fear of the Lord, meaning you have a healthy, reverential respect and admiration of God and His Word. Fearing God doesn’t mean fearing He will destroy us but fearing or reverencing His Words and obeying them. That’s how wisdom begins.
Guidance
Today’s GPS is not perfect. I’ve seen them make many mistakes, but those who seek the guidance of God have better direction and know where they’re going more than someone who has a properly working GPS. The truth is, “Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety” (Proverbs 11:14), so seek godly guidance when you need it, or a fall is coming your way.
Listen
Many people listen, but few people hear, particularly what the Word of God says. The Bible is the wisdom of God in print, so “Listen to advice and accept instruction, that you may gain wisdom in the future” (Proverbs 19:20). God speaks to us today, but most clearly through His Word. If only we would listen. If we listen and obey what we hear, we can “gain wisdom in the future” and for the future.
Counselors
Maybe it’s pride or maybe it’s embarrassment, but for some reason, many people are hesitant to see guidance from godly men or women. That’s our loss, “For by wise guidance you can wage your war, and in abundance of counselors there is victory” (Proverbs 24:6). This tells us that we need to seek the advice or counsel of more than one person because where there are many counselors, “there is victory.”
Trust in God
When my son was young, I used to walk him across the street to take him to school. I wasn’t depending on him to hold onto my hand. No, I had his hand in mine and wasn’t going to let go. My son wasn’t afraid to cross the street if I had his hand in mine. That’s because he trusted me, so we must “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6). Trusting in Him means not leaning on what you think is right but leaning upon Him.
We all need advice and the best advice I can give you is to seek out God’s Word when you need advice. The best advice comes from God, especially the command to repent and believe the gospel (Mark 1:15). It is God’s will that all men and women should repent and believe in Jesus Christ. That’s the very best advice on the planet.
