What is the greatest thing that we can be healed from by the Great Physician? Read on to find out what it is.
The Greatest Disease
What is the greatest human disease there is? Is it cancer, which affects all people regardless of social status? Is it heart disease? I believe that the greatest disease, if you want to call it that, is the disease of sin because it is not limited to this physical existence on earth, although sin does hurt us in every sense of the word, but it is eternal death that sin ultimately inflicts upon human beings. Since every one of us has sinned and fallen far short of God’s glory (Rom 3:23), not one of us does good (Rom 3:10), and the wages of our sins is death (Rom 6:23a), then we see that our problem is in the human heart. Fortunately, God has provided the cure: “The free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Rom 6:23b). There is no other cure to be found for the depravity of humankind except by the death of Jesus Christ (John 3:16).
The Ultimate Healing
Isaiah writes about the extreme cost that our healing from sin took, and it was in Jesus’ suffering and death. Isaiah writes about what Jesus did for sin-stricken humans: “Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows” (Isaiah 53:4a), “he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5). Why was this necessary? It was because “we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way” (Isaiah 53:6a), so “the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all” (Isaiah 53:6b). God declares that He was “stricken for the transgression of my people” (Isaiah 53:8c), and “it was the will of the Lord to crush him; he has put him to grief; when his soul makes an offering for guilt” (Isaiah 53:10a). In this way, He will “make many to be accounted righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities” (Isaiah 53:11b). Jesus’ death brings ultimate healing, a healing of the sin-sickness that we all have acquired at birth (Psalm 51:5).
Come to the Great Physician
If you have been born again, you’ll not face the Judge at the Great White Throne Judgment (Rev 20:12-15). Instead, you’ll be part of the New Jerusalem, the kingdom of God (Rev 21, 22). The Great Physician paid the greatest price ever to heal His people of sin and bring us into a right relationship with God, where at one time we were His enemies (Rom 5:10), but now in Christ we have peace with God (Rom 5:1), and there isn’t any more condemnation that we have to fear (Rom 8:1). That is the greatest healing that anyone could ever experience. Today God is still doing great miracles in healing people of their diseases, but they will die again; however, the greatest healing was done on the cross at Calvary, and this brings eternal life for all who believe in Him.
Conclusion
If you haven’t been born again, you have an appointment with the Judge of the Universe (Heb 9:27). Why not believe in Him today and make Him your Savior instead of rejecting Him and making Him your Judge someday. The Great Physician spread His arms wide open at the cross and said, “I love you this much.” Will you come to the Great Physician today if you haven’t already done so?
