5 Stories From The Bible For Couples To Study
Here are 5 great stories from the Bible for couples to study.
Adam and Eve – Genesis 2
All that God created was good, but what was not good was Adam had no earthly companion, so “the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him” (Genesis 2:18). Where it says “fit for him” is better rendered in the Hebrew as “corresponding to him.” That doesn’t mean he is superior to Eve because men and women are co-equal, co-heirs before Christ, so Eve stands right beside Adam, where his missing rib is.
Abraham and Sarah – Genesis 21
A year earlier, Abraham and Sarah were told they would conceive and have a child, but at a time when most couples were no longer able to bear children. It didn’t matter. God had promised it, and “Sarah conceived and bore
Jacob and Rachel – Genesis 29
Jacob was tricked by Rachel’s father into marrying Leah instead of the one he loved, which was Rachel, but Jacob so loved Rachel that Jacob was willing to work another seven years (14 for both Leah and Rachel!) because “Jacob loved Rachel. And he said, “I will serve you seven years for your younger daughter Rachel” (Genesis 29:18). Love motivates us to do what we would not ordinarily do on our own.
Joseph and Mary – Luke 1
Joseph, upon hearing Mary was with child, and not yet realizing that the Holy Spirit conceived Jesus in her womb, was going to divorce her quietly, meaning, he was not going to make her a public spectacle. Some might have even wanted to stone her, but Joseph was told that this was from God, so “to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary” (Luke 1:27), and her baby was Jesus. Joseph does deserve some respect in how he handled things.
Jesus and the Bride – Revelation 19
Jesus is coming back for His church someday, figuratively called the Bride of Christ. When we do see Him, we will “rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his Bride has made herself ready” (Revelation 19:7). In a vision, the Apostle John saw “the Bride, the wife of the Lamb” (Revelation 21:9). He desires a bride that is living in holiness and is awaiting His coming with eager anticipation.
A Couple’s Togetherness
Couples that study together, worship together, pray together, and serve together, should expect to stay together longer. This is why it is so important to not be unequally yoked or married to an unbeliever. Water and oil don’t mix any more than light and darkness do.
