14 Best Bible Verses About Grief And Sorrow
All of us have had to go through a time of grief and sorrow, and these 14 best Bible verses about grief and sorrow show what we have in common with others who grieve.
5 Stories From The Bible About Sorrow
Here are 5 stories from the Bible that speak about sorrow.
The Garden
Jesus was a Man of sorrow at times while here on earth but especially when He took “with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled” (Matthew 26:37). He was sorrowful , knowing the cup of Calvary was soon to be drank for the sins of the world, but He did it anyway, knowing He came to give His life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45), but His sorrow passed and so will ours someday.
The Betrayer
When Jesus revealed that He was to be betrayed by one of His own disciples, “they were very sorrowful and began to say to him one after another, “Is it I, Lord” (Matthew 26:22)? Not only was Jesus sorrowful about Judas’ betraying Him, so too were the other disciples, thinking it might even be them, but their sorrow would soon be turned to joy, especially after seeing Jesus’ raised again.
The Rich Young Man
The young rich ruler came to Jesus, asking how he might receive eternal life, and after trying to justify himself by his good works. That’s when Jesus told him to give to the poor, all that he had, but “When the young man heard this he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions” (Matthew 19:22). If only the young man had realized that if he had nothing at all, He had everything in Christ.
The Cross
The disciples were deeply troubled by Jesus telling them that He was going away. Over the last three and a half years, Jesus has been all they knew, but now He was going away, so Jesus tries to reassure them by telling them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy” (John 16:22). That came true when they saw the resurrected Christ, and that will be our joy too when we see the Lord Jesus Christ for the very first time.
The Persecutions
When we are persecuted, we rarely rejoice, but it’s actually a blessing (Matthew 5:10-12), but it was tough for the Apostle Paul who was persecuted far worse than the other apostles. He told the church at Corinth that “we live; as punished, and yet not killed; as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, yet possessing everything” (2 Corinthians 6:9b-10). Many had lost everything they had but in Christ they had gained everything.
