If you know someone who’s experienced a great loss, here are the top 12 Bible verses for condolences in the hopes that they will receive comfort from God’s Word.
5 Stories From The Bible About Condolences
To Suffer With – Romans 12
The word condolence means to have sympathy with, and that’s just what a believer should do when someone they know is suffering or has had a great loss. The Apostle Paul says that we should “Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep” (Romans 12:15). Weeping with those who weep shows them our condolences, acknowledging their sorrow, suffering, and pain.
Showing Sympathy – 1 Peter 3
The Apostle Peter wrote, “Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind” (1 Peter 3:8). That sympathy or brotherly love unifies us in another person’s pain. It shows we care. I’ve heard that a joy shared is doubled, but a grief shared, is halved, or cut in two, so let us show love, sympathy, and express compassion for those who are hurting. We might need someone to do that for us someday.
End of Sorrow, Pain and Death – Revelation 21
I have had hundreds of hospital visits in my life and seen so much sickness, sorrow, pain, suffering and death, so I really can’t wait for the day when “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away” (Revelation 21:4). That will be the greatest condolence of all.
A Brother in Need – 1 John 3
The Bible teaches that if we see a need and ignore it, it is sin, so in that frame of mind, the Apostle John wrote, “But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him” (1 John 3:17). One example is if someone is hungry and I have two apples, but only need one, why don’t I share it with the one who has none? If I don’t, that is sin to me. To do so, shows I care.
Blessed are the Mournful – Matthew 5
The first time I read, “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted” (Matthew 5:4), I didn’t really understand it…that is, until someone comforted me in my time of mourning. There is a blessing from God for those who do mourn, but that blessing comes in the way that they are comforted by others. God uses others as a means to comfort us, so let’s be comforting others in their times of need. We’ll need it someday.
Help Provide Comfort by Sharing God’s Word
Whoever you see someone that needs condolences or sympathy, do not hesitate to extend them some comfort because God “comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God” (2 Corinthians 1:4).
When we are grieving, the Word of God can comfort us, so please share these top 12 Bible verses for condolence with someone who may have suffered the loss of a loved one.
