5 Stories From The Bible About Prayer

Here are 5 great stories from the Bible about prayer.

No Anxiety – Philippians 4

If we only realized that we can bring everything to God in prayer and not try to handle these burdens alone, then we’d come to pray more often.  The Apostle Paul said, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God” (Philippians 4:6).  The converse is true; if we don’t ask in prayer about everything, we’ll have anxiety in everything.

Believe it, Receive it – Mark 11

Why would we pray for something and not believe God would answer our prayers?  That would seem to be a waste of time, but of course, we need to pray for God’s will to be done, for God will not answer a prayer that is contrary to His will, but Saint Mark wrote that “whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours” (Mark 11:24).  We cannot please God without faith (Hebrews 11:6), so believe God will answer your prayer, and He will…but only in His time and in His way.

Help in Prayer – Romans 8

There are times when I draw a blank on what to pray for or there’s such a burden in my heart about something or someone, that I can’t even put it into words, but here’s where the Spirit helps us.  Paul said that “the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words” (Romans 8:26).  Let the Spirit of God help you pray when you’re at a loss for words.

Prayer Closet – Matthew 6

The religious Jews loved to be seen by men and had the longest prayers of anyone, but Jesus rebuked them for that and told the disciples that “when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you” (Matthew 6:6). Praying in public is fine, but our most effective prayers are done in secret, before the Father and not to be seen by others.

Pray without Ceasing – 1 Thessalonians 5

The best way to operate during the day is to “Pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17). This doesn’t mean all you do is pray because we must work, sleep, eat, and live life, but Paul’s idea is to pray about things as often as we can and whenever we can.  Praying without ceasing means to pray and not give up and pray throughout the day.

Final Words on Prayer

The Bible tells us we don’t need a lot of showy words or sophisticated language when we pray (Matthew 6:7), but just pray and ask, seek, and knock, and God will open doors by means of our prayers (Luke 11:9). The greatest tragedy of prayer is the prayers not prayed.
