Top 14 Bible Verses On Judging People
It’s so easy to judge others and have others judge us, but we can be wrong, so here are the top 14 Bible verses about judging people from Scripture.
5 Stories From The Bible About Judging People
Here are 5 stories from the Bible about judging people.
Judge Not
Jesus told us, “Judge not, that you be not judged” (Matthew 7:1). God alone is the judge. When we see our brother or sister living in what we think is a minor sin, but we’ve got a log beam in our own eye (Matthew 7:3-4) we can’t see well enough to judge others of things of a lessor nature. Our own (bigger) sin is impeding our eyesight, so we’re in no position to judge someone who’s got a speck in their eye.
Judging by Appearances
Our temptation is to judge by what we see on the outside, but how often we’ve been wrong. Jesus tells us, “Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment” (John 7:24). God does not choose by what’s on the outside or by appearances, but by what’s in the heart. We would never have chosen the young teen David to go up against Goliath, but God saw David’s heart and knew that he was exactly the right man.
Jesus’ Power
When we speak negatively against our brother or sister, in a sense, we’re judging them. James wrote, “Do not speak evil against one another, brothers. The one who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks evil against the law and judges the law” (James 4:11a). By speaking evil about someone, we judge that someone; and when we judge that someone, we judge the law. We take the law into our own hands, appointing ourselves as judge, jury, and executioner.
Hypocrisy
People are turned off by hypocrisy. When they see a politician say that they won’t raise taxes, but then they do, people become angry because they broke their word, but if we are doing something that is sinful and accuse someone else of the same thing, we also become hypocrites. The Apostle Paul asked, “Do you suppose, O man—you who judge those who practice such things and yet do them yourself—that you will escape the judgment of God” (Rom 2:3)? God is no respecter of persons and we will all have to face the judgement of God (2 Corinthians 5:10). Better to trust in Christ today and have your judgment placed upon Him.
Benefit of the Doubt
I heard one old preacher say the only exercise some Christians get is to stretch the truth and jump to conclusions, and maybe he’s right. The loving thing to do is to give people the benefit of the doubt since love believes all things (1 Corinthians 13:7). Jesus asked, “Does our law judge a man without first giving him a hearing and learning what he does” (John 7:51)? Since we don’t do that in a legal court of law, we shouldn’t do it with other people. We need to make sure we have all the facts.
