Below are 5 short stories from the Bible about helping others:

Helping Others (Deuteronomy 22)

The Old Testament laws were designed to show God’s heart, and He has great regard for the animals He created.  For example, one law says, “You shall not see your brother’s donkey or his ox fallen down by the way and ignore them. You shall help him to lift them up again” (Deuteronomy 22:4).  Since God has regard for animals, we should also, and that means we care for animals…even if they’re not ours.

Helping the Weak (1 Thessalonians 5)

If we realize that we have needed help from others, we should be quick to help others in need.  The Apostle Paul said, “In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”  It is not the strong or the self-sufficient that need our help, but those who are weak (1 Thessalonians 5:14), and when we do, we are blessed, since “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” Don’t rob yourself of a blessing by not blessing others.

Helped by Prayer (Philippians 1)

Maybe we’ve never thought that we can help others by prayer, but the Apostle Paul points out that “You also must help us by prayer, so that many will give thanks on our behalf for the blessing granted us through the prayers of many” (2 Corinthians 1:11).  God uses our prayers as a means to help others (Philippians 1:19).

Helping the Laborers (Philippians 4)

I can tell Paul didn’t take for granted those who helped spread the gospel. He wrote, “Yes, I ask you also, true companion, help these women, who have labored side by side with me in the gospel together with Clement and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the book of life” (Philippians 4:3). Helping laborers of the gospel helps to spread the gospel (Phil 4:16), and God is most pleased with that.

Helping the Fatherless  (Job 29 and James 1)

Job was a righteous man, and part of his righteousness was helping the poor.   He could honestly say that he “delivered the poor who cried for help, and the fatherless who had none to help him” (Job 29:12).  Job knew how God feels about helping orphans and widows, even calling it “pure religion” (James 1:27).
