5 Stories From The Bible From The Gospel Of John

Here are 5 stories from the Bible from the Gospel of John.

The Word Became Flesh

The Apostle John was a witness of Jesus’ divinity and His humanity, so He wrote that “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14).  Jesus was both God and Man, and was God and is God and was with God in the beginning, but He came to earth to be born of a virgin so that He might die for those who would trust in Him.

God So Loved

The Apostle John records perhaps the best known Bible verse of all, where Jesus said that “God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).  This means that “whoever believes” can be saved and will “not perish” receive “eternal life,” so to believe in Jesus means we have eternal life, however those who reject Christ are “condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God” (John 3:18b).

The Samaritan Woman

Jesus loved to crush the Jewish traditions since they were not based upon the Word of God but upon the word of man, so when Jesus came to speak with a woman, and a Samaritan at that, the disciples “marveled that he was talking with a woman” (John 4:27). That’s something that Jewish men never did publically, and especially with a Samaritan, but Jesus did both, showing that salvation was open to all who believed and not just the Jews.

Lazarus’ Raised

When Martha and Mary’s brother Lazarus had died, they had called Jesus to come to him so that he might not die, but Lazarus did die, so Martha told Jesus in what seemed like a mild rebuke, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died” (John 11:21).  Martha didn’t understand that Jesus came to raise Lazarus from the dead so that God would be glorified.  He told Martha, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live” (John 11:25).  I hope you believe this.

A New Commandment

In the last few days of Jesus’ earthly ministry, He gave His disciples a new commandment, and that commandment was “that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another” (John 13:34b). The way Jesus loved the disciples was that He died for them…giving Himself for their sake.  It would be this kind of love that “all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:35). When the world (all men) sees that we love one another like that, they will recognize who Jesus’ true disciples are.
