5 Stories From The Bible To Read When Overcoming Addictions

Here are 5 stories from the Bible to read when you’re overcoming an addiction.

All Things Through Him

When the Apostle Paul said that “I can do all things through him who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13), he meant he can live without all the creature comforts in life like food, shelter, and safety.  Paul had already faced plenty, including hunger (Philippians 4:12), but he learned to be content with whatever situation he faced (Philippians 4:11). If you’re facing an addiction, you cannot do anything without Him.  He alone can strengthen you in this battle.

In Him

Jesus Christ refers to Himself as the Vine. Since He is the Vine, we are simply branches attached to that Vine, but I’ve never seen a branch do anything without being attached to the vine.  It can only die.  Jesus said, “I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:5).  Apart from Him, we can do nothing but wither and die…so “nothing” is not a little something.

His Word

The psalmist found a powerful help in overcoming sin in His life, and maybe it’ll help those who are overcoming additions.  He wrote, “I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you” (Psalm 119:11). Hiding God’s Word in your heart means memorizing Scripture and pulling it from memory when you need it.  By storing it up ahead of time, you’ll be forearmed to face temptation when it comes.

In Fasts

If you read Isaiah 58 you can read about many of the wrong reasons for fasting.  Many in Jesus’ day fasted to be seen by others, but the Bible asks, “Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the straps of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke” (Isaiah 58:6)? Fasting can help us see our utter dependency upon God and no one else.  We are helpless before God in battling the strongholds in our lives, but fasting has helped many overcome their addictions.

A Way of Escape

Feel like you’re situation is unique? Sorry to say, it’s not because “No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it” (1 Corinthians 10:13).  The “way of escape” might be by means of a Christian friend, fasting, a counselor, prayer, or a support group, or all of these, but God will always provide a way of escape.  The question is, will we choose to take it?

If you have a friend, co-worker, or even a family member who is trying to overcome a destructive addiction, please pray for them, and tell them you are praying for them.
