5 Stories From The Bible About God’s Will
Here are 5 stories from the Bible that speak about God’s will
The Father’s Will
Three times Jesus prayed, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will” (Matthew 26:39). He was sacrificing His own body so that we might be justified by His blood and saved by His atonement of the Passion. Aren’t we glad that He put the Father’s will ahead of what He wanted, that being the cup’s passing? We too must put the will of God ahead of our will, and that’s good anyway, since whatever happens to us will work out for our very best (Romans 8:28), even if it doesn’t look like it at the time.
Not His Own Will
Jesus came to down from heaven to do the will of the Father and not His own will. That doesn’t mean Jesus and the Father’s will were not the same thing. Only in the Garden did Jesus pray to have the cup removed, but He knew it was the will of the Father and He submitted to that will. He said as much in John 6:38, saying, “For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me.” We too must be doing the will of the Father, being sent wherever He wills us to go. Let God’s will be our will.
Praying for God’s Will
Sometimes I get this wrong. I pray for my will to be done on earth as it should be in heaven instead of His will being done on earth as it’s already being done in heaven. Is all of the will of God being done in heaven? Positively, yes! Jesus told the disciples to pray that “Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:10). Let’s make sure it’s His will we pray for and not our own. Our wills may not end well.
God’s Word and Will
A good way to know if what you’re being taught is sound or not, consider what Jesus said in John 7:17, where our Lord said, “If anyone’s will is to do God’s will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority” (John 7:17). Doing God’s revealed will in the Bible will help you discern truth from error, knowing “whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority,” and not from some man-centered authority.
The Persisting
God’s revealed will is that He desires that all should repent and believe (Mark 1:15). The Apostle Peter had been with Jesus and knew, “The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance” (2 Peter 3:9). I pray that’s our will, now till the kingdom.
