5 Stories From The Bible About Missionaries

Here are 5 stories from the Bible about missionaries.

Going into the World

In a real sense, we’re all missionaries for God.  We might be the only ones who will witness to our neighbors, co-workers or family, so as Jesus said to the disciples, so He says to us, “ Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matt 28:19).  You can’t even spell Gospel without spelling “Go!”

With Them

After Jesus gave the disciples (and us) the Great Commission, He gave them further instructions, telling them to be teaching the new disciples “to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age” (Matt 28:20).  First, whatever we read in the Gospels is what Jesus taught the disciples, so we use the Word of God to share news about the Son of God, and we can take heart as missionaries, that He is always with us, even “to the end of the age.”

Power in the Gospel

After the disciples had been given their marching orders, they were told to stay in Jerusalem and wait.  Then, on the Day of Pentecost, they received some much needed power.  The Lord told them “you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth” (Acts 1:8).  There is power, not in themselves, but in His Spirit and in the Gospel itself (Romans 1:16; 1 Corinthians 1:18).

Show Mercy

One of the gifts of the Spirit is that of having mercy.  Perhaps this is a good fit for those who have doubts or fear.  Jude wrote that we should “have mercy on those who doubt” (Jude 1:22), but “save others by snatching them out of the fire; to others show mercy with fear, hating even the garment stained by the flesh” (Jude 1:23). Some doubt their own salvation.  Maybe you can show them why we have no reason to doubt from Scripture (John 6:44, 10:28-29). To be used by God to snatch some out of the fire is one of the greatest joys and privileges given by God.

Woe unto Them

Every missionary and every pastor I’ve ever met was consumed, like a fire burning in their bosom, that they could not help but preach the good news to the lost.  The Apostle Paul must have surely felt this too as he wrote, “For if I preach the gospel, that gives me no ground for boasting. For necessity is laid upon me. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel” (1 Corinthians 9:16)!  Paul, like missionaries, has no choice but to preach the gospel.  Woe unto them if they don’t.
